Copper at the heart of Sustainable Energy

Copper plays an essential role in nearly every aspect of our lives. That’s why it is also important to understand the contributions that copper products will play in Europe’s future.

In the Autumn 2010 issue of CopperWire, we explored the links between copper and the policies that drive Europe’s competitiveness. We were encouraged by the feedback received, especially regarding the Principles Required to Balance EU Policy Objectives outlined in the European Copper Industry’s Manifesto.

Following EU’s Sustainable Energy Week, this issue focuses on copper’s many important contributions towards efficient and sustainable energy. In particular, how it supports the European Commission’s key 2020 climate objectives of a:

  • 20% reduction in the emissions of greenhouse gases compared to 1990
  • 20% share of renewables in the EU energy mix
  • 20% reduction in energy consumption via a mix of savings and efficiency actions

Virtually all materials face competitive threats, either from other materials or through technological innovation. However, our market intelligence and research reports confirm that the intrinsic thermal and electrical conductivities of copper continue to deliver the improvements in energy efficiency required, for example, in the building construction and heating and air conditioning sectors.

Through its Leonardo ENERGY initiative and participation in the European Technology Platform - Renewable Heating and Cooling platform , ECI is supported by many partners from across the industrial value chain and academia. It offers a unique source of market intelligence, case studies, technical publications and educational tools to all those committed to encouraging the delivery of more sustainable energy and its responsible consumption.

By clicking through the various stories in this newsletter, we hope you build an appreciation of why Copper is Essential for Everyone.
