The Gold Standard for Infection Prevention

A state-of-the-art Cystic Fibrosis centre being constructed at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital in the UK is due to set the gold standard for infection prevention with Antimicrobial Copper door furniture specified throughout in a bid to reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections in particularly vulnerable patients.

Senior Project Manager Stephen Jenkins of Turner & Townsend explains the use of copper: “Copper plays an important role in the entire life cycle of the CF building and  its contents, from design, through use, to end of life recycling. Our architects  and  designers value copper for its malleability, resistance to corrosion,  durability and aesthetic qualities. It also helps us to improve energy efficiency in electricity distribution and appliances. Since copper is naturally antimicrobial (hence  the  decision  to  install  copper ironmongery),  it  can  also  improve  the  safety  and  hygiene  of  water distribution and air ventilation systems.”
